Samsung's July 22 Unpacked event: what's actually landing

· Hardware · By Nath Connell

Samsung has locked in 22 July 2026 for its next Galaxy Unpacked, and this one looks like the busiest foldable refresh the company has done in years. Three foldables are expected on stage: the Galaxy Z Fold 8, a new Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra sitting above it, and the Galaxy Z Flip 8.

The Flip 8 is the one most people will actually consider buying. Leaks point to a 6.9-inch main AMOLED panel with a much less visible crease than the Flip 7, a 4.1-inch cover screen for notifications and quick replies, and a 4,300mAh battery, up from the Flip 7's smaller cell. Charging stays modest at 25W wired, with rumours of 15W wireless finally arriving. That's still behind rivals like the OnePlus Open, which charges at 67W, but Samsung has never prioritised speed here.

The Fold 8 Ultra is the more interesting story: a genuine step up rather than a colour variant, aimed at buyers who found the regular Fold competent but unexciting. Expect a thinner hinge, a brighter cover display, and a price that will sting. If Samsung follows the pattern from the Fold 7 Ultra rumours that circulated earlier this year, we're looking at $1,999/£1,799 territory for the top configuration.

Watches alongside the phones

Samsung is also expected to launch two new smartwatches at the same event, running the stable release of One UI 9 Watch. Given Wareable and SamMobile both flagged a "massive design update" to the Galaxy Wearable app landing alongside, this looks like a proper software refresh rather than a hardware-only exercise.

Should you care?

If you own a Z Fold 6 or older, this is the first Unpacked in a while worth actually watching rather than skimming a recap of afterwards. If you're happy with a Flip 7, the incremental battery and screen changes on the Flip 8 won't justify an upgrade on their own. The real tell will be pricing: Samsung has been raising foldable prices as memory costs climb across the industry, and 22 July is when we find out how much that gets passed on to buyers.
