On 12 August 2026, the Moon will slide fully in front of the Sun and drop a narrow band of darkness across the top of the world. This total solar eclipse on 12 August 2026 is the first to touch mainland Europe in years, and for a lot of people it is the most reachable one since 2017.
The path of totality clips Siberia, crosses eastern Greenland, runs down the west coast of Iceland, and then sweeps into northern Spain, with a sliver of Portugal at the very end. Reykjavik sits inside it. So does a wide stretch of northern Spain, where the band is about 290 km across.
Totality is brief. At most you get about 2 minutes and 18 seconds of the Sun fully covered, and less than that away from the centre line. In Iceland the Sun goes dark in the late afternoon or early evening. In Spain it happens close to sunset, with the eclipsed Sun hanging low in the sky, which can make for a dramatic view if the horizon is clear.
Everywhere outside the narrow path gets a partial eclipse instead, a bite taken out of the Sun rather than a full blackout. Much of Europe and the North Atlantic will see at least that.
If you want the full effect, you need to be inside the path of totality, not just near it. The clear-sky odds tend to favour northern Spain and Mallorca over Iceland in August, though the weather on the day is always the gamble. Reykjavik is the easy option if you are already in Iceland, since the capital itself is in the path.
Wherever you go, arrive early and pick a spot with a low, open western horizon, especially in Spain where the Sun sets soon after totality.
This is the part people get wrong. You cannot look at a partial eclipse safely with the naked eye, and that covers almost the entire event either side of those two minutes. Ordinary sunglasses do nothing. You need proper solar eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard, or a certified solar filter fitted over any telescope, binoculars, or camera lens.
