We found air around a rocky planet in the habitable zone

Astronomers report the first detected atmosphere around a rocky, Earth-sized planet sitting in its star's habitable zone. An atmosphere is the precondition for the chemistry we care about when we ask whether a world could hold life.

Why it matters: rocky planet plus habitable zone plus atmosphere is the combination the whole exoplanet field has been chasing. This is the first time all three line up in one detection.
