What Happens Tomorrow
At 18:27 GMT on August 12, the Moon will slide directly between the Earth and the Sun along a 305 km wide path stretching from eastern Greenland, through western Iceland, and into northern Spain. For up to 110 seconds, the sky will go dark in the middle of a summer evening.
This is the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since August 1999, and the first from mainland Spain since 1905. Cities inside the path of totality include Bilbao, Santander, Valladolid, Burgos, Zaragoza, and Valencia. Madrid and Barcelona sit just outside, catching 99.9% coverage, close enough to notice the light change but not full totality.
Around 980 million people, nearly one in eight worldwide, will see some degree of coverage.
Why This Eclipse Is Unusual
Most total eclipses happen over open ocean or remote stretches of land. This one crosses densely populated parts of Europe during the golden hour before sunset, meaning the sky will shift from daylight to a dark, warm-toned twilight and back again in under two minutes. Photographers and astronomers have been planning for this alignment for years.
During totality, the Sun's corona, its outer atmosphere of superheated plasma, becomes visible to the naked eye. Scientists use these brief windows to study coronal structure, calibrate solar instruments, and test predictions from general relativity. ESA is hosting live broadcasts for those outside the path.
Where and How to Watch
The path of totality enters Spain from the northwest, crossing the Cantabrian coast before sweeping through Castilla y Leon and Aragon. If you are anywhere in western or northern Europe, you will see a partial eclipse. The further south and west you are within Spain, the longer totality lasts.
You need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses to watch any partial phase safely. Regular sunglasses are not sufficient. During the brief seconds of totality, and only during totality, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Double Feature: Perseids Peak Tonight Too
The same New Moon causing tomorrow's eclipse means tonight's skies will be exceptionally dark. That is perfect timing for the Perseid meteor shower, which peaks on the nights of August 12-13. Dark-sky viewers could see 50 to 75 meteors per hour after midnight.
This is the first time a total solar eclipse and the Perseid peak have coincided in the 21st century. Eclipse by day, shooting stars by night. A pair of astronomy binoculars will help with the Perseids, though both events are visible without any equipment.
What Comes Next
