Europe's first total solar eclipse in years arrives on 12 August
On 12 August 2026 the Moon throws a narrow shadow across Siberia, eastern Greenland, the west coast of Iceland and northern Spain, with a sliver of Portugal catching the very end. Reykjavik sits right inside the path, where the Sun goes dark in the late afternoon. In Spain the eclipse arrives close to sunset, along a band of totality about 290 km wide.
Maximum totality runs about 2 minutes and 18 seconds. This is the first total solar eclipse to touch mainland Europe in decades, and the first easy-to-reach one for many people since 2017. Everywhere off the centre line still gets a partial eclipse, so a big slice of Europe and the North Atlantic sees at least a bite taken out of the Sun.
If you plan to watch, one rule matters above all: safety. Never look at the Sun without proper ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses, and never point a camera, telescope or binoculars at it without a fitted solar filter. Ordinary sunglasses do not come close.
Why it matters: this is the rare science event you can watch with your own eyes, no lab required, and it lands on Europe's doorstep. Clear skies over Iceland, Mallorca and northern Spain look like the best bets, so it is worth sorting travel and gear now rather than in the final week.
