Google has dropped three new Gemini models: Gemini 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, and a security-tuned 3.5 Flash Cyber that is limited to governments and trusted partners. The one many people were actually waiting for, the flagship 3.5 Pro, has slipped again and still is not shipping.
In the same breath, Google said it has kicked off its most ambitious pre-training run yet, for Gemini 4. So the flagship for this generation is late, and the company is already pouring compute into the next one.
Read the lineup and the message is clear. Google is competing hardest on cheap, fast models that developers can run at scale, while the headline-grabbing frontier model keeps drifting to the right. Flash-Lite is built to be tiny and quick, and Flash Cyber is a signal that security-hardened variants are becoming their own product line.
Why it matters: the battleground has shifted from raw capability to speed and price. Most real products do not need the biggest brain, they need a good-enough one that is fast and cheap. Google is optimising for exactly that, and betting that Gemini 4 will handle the bragging rights later.
