OpenAI has closed its largest funding round yet, a reported $122 billion at an $852 billion valuation. Amazon is said to have contributed around $50 billion, with Nvidia and SoftBank near $30 billion each. Numbers this size stop looking like venture capital and start looking like nation-state money aimed at compute.
The size of the cheque points to where the AI race is really fought: data centres and chip supply, not chatbots. When your largest cloud rival and your main chip supplier are also your investors, the roles of customer, supplier and owner blur quickly.
It also resets the board for rivals. A war chest this large buys years of runway, first pick of scarce accelerators, and the freedom to out-wait competitors who have to watch their burn rate.
Why it matters: Whoever locks up compute sets the tempo for the next two years of AI, and an $852 billion valuation says the market believes OpenAI just did.
