[Space & Future Tech] The Sun goes dark over Europe in 9 days

Eclipse glasses, a quasar record, and a telescope 100 times wider than Hubble.

In nine days the Moon parks itself in front of the Sun and turns the afternoon dark over Iceland and northern Spain. That is the headline event of the fortnight, but underneath it two chip companies just admitted the AI race has become a security and software problem too big to fight alone.


The Big 3

Europe gets its first total solar eclipse in decades

On 12 August 2026 the Moon's shadow crosses Siberia, eastern Greenland, the west coast of Iceland and northern Spain, with totality maxing out at 2 minutes and 18 seconds. Reykjavik sits inside the path, and so does a 290 km wide band of northern Spain. Everywhere else in Europe and the North Atlantic gets a partial bite taken out of the Sun instead.

Ordinary sunglasses do nothing here. You need glasses certified to ISO 12312-2, such as the VOLTNGO eclipse glasses, and they stay on until totality actually hits.

Why it matters: this is the rare astronomical event you watch with your own eyes rather than read about afterwards, and it is the first easy one for most of the continent since 2017.

Nvidia just talked 30 rivals into one AI security club

On 27 July Nvidia launched the Open Secure AI Alliance, an open-source effort with more than 30 founding members including Microsoft, IBM, SpaceX, Adobe, Cloudflare and the Linux Foundation, built to share tooling for securing AI systems rather than each company building its own in isolation.

Why it matters: companies that spend the rest of the year competing just agreed the attack surface is now too big for any one of them to defend alone, which says more about how rough the last month of AI security news has been than any press release will admit.

Qualcomm just bought its way into the AI software war

Qualcomm is acquiring AI software firm Modular in an all-stock deal worth roughly 3.92 billion dollars, picking up the MAX platform and the Mojo language that let AI models run across different kinds of chips rather than being locked to one vendor's hardware.

Why it matters: Nvidia won the last decade by owning CUDA, the software layer developers get stuck writing for. Qualcomm just bought its own version of that lock-in, and the chip war is turning into a fight over whose software you are stuck using.

Quick Hits

Oldest quasars on record. Astronomers have catalogued 31 of the earliest known quasars, including the two oldest ever detected, blazing from a time when the universe was only about 670 million years old. More at ScienceDaily.

Future Watch

NASA's Roman Space Telescope, launching 30 August

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is fuelled and set to launch on 30 August 2026 at 07:26 EDT (11:26 UTC) aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 39A. Its field of view is roughly 100 times wider than Hubble's, built to survey dark energy, hunt exoplanets by microlensing and map the structure of the universe at a scale no other telescope attempts.

Why it matters: it is the next flagship observatory after JWST, and a wide survey scope answers a completely different set of questions than a deep, narrow zoom lens does.

What to watch for: a clean separation from the Falcon Heavy upper stage, successful deployment of the sunshield and solar arrays, and the weeks-long cruise out to the Sun-Earth L2 point before first light later in the year.

The Long View

Somewhere in the next fortnight you can stand in a field in northern Spain and watch the Sun vanish with your own eyes, no instrument needed beyond a pair of cheap certified glasses. In the same two weeks, astronomers published light that left its source when the universe was 670 million years old, a signal so faint and so old it needed a purpose-built survey and decades of theory just to notice it was there. Both are real. Both are just light doing what light does, at wildly different scales of effort to see it.
