Amazon is accused of overcharging advertisers 20 billion dollars, and you paid for it
On 31 August the FTC, joined by 22 state attorneys general, sued Amazon over what it says is more than 20 billion dollars in advertising overcharges going back to 2019. The claim is that the auction behind sponsored listings was manipulated, and that roughly 1.2 million advertising customers were misled about pricing and terms. More than 500,000 of those are small and medium businesses.
Amazon rejects the framing. Its counter is that advertisers saved over 8 billion dollars between 2021 and 2025 because relevance was baked into the auction rather than pure bid ranking, and that the average winning bid for sponsored product search ads fell 50 percent between 2019 and 2024. Both things can be true at once, which is why this will take years.
The part most coverage buries is the consumer angle. The complaint argues inflated ad costs get passed straight through into the price of the thing you actually buy. This is the third major federal action against Amazon, and the penalties could run into billions.
Why it matters: sponsored placement is now the default way products get discovered online, and the auction deciding what you see is a black box to almost everyone outside the seller community. A lawsuit is a rare chance to look inside it.

There is a free public list of the vulnerabilities criminals are provably using right now, and almost nobody outside security teams looks at it. It is the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, and it is searchable by vendor and product.
Honest take: it is dry, it is not written for normal people, and the deadlines in it are aimed at federal agencies. Use it anyway. Write down every internet facing thing you run, including the router and the NAS, search each one, and subscribe to the RSS feed so you stop checking manually. Anything on the list you cannot patch today, take off the public internet instead. Twenty minutes, once a month.
