Samsung's foldables just got real specs, days before Unpacked

Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked lands on Tuesday 22 July, streamed from London at 2pm BST (9am EDT), and in the days before it the guessing game has mostly given way to leaked hardware detail.

Three foldables are expected on stage: the Galaxy Z Fold 8, a wider Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra that appears to be the true successor to last year's Fold 7, and the clamshell Galaxy Z Flip 8. The headline change is on the Fold 8 Ultra's camera bar, which leaks suggest gets a 200MP primary sensor with optical image stabilisation, matching the Galaxy S Ultra line's camera tier for the first time on a Fold. It's paired with a 50MP ultrawide and a 10MP telephoto offering 3x optical zoom.

Battery capacity climbs too, with a 5,000mAh cell said to be a 14% jump on the Fold 7's 4,400mAh, alongside 45W wired charging, up from last year's 25W cap. Samsung is also introducing a new Flex Titanium display technology across its 2026 foldables, pitched as improving durability and reducing how visible the fold crease is over time.

Pricing leaks put the Fold 8 Ultra's base 256GB configuration at $1,999 to $2,099, which would make it Samsung's most expensive mainstream foldable yet. The Z Flip 8 is expected to be a smaller step up from the Flip 7 rather than a full redesign.

Should you care?

If you've been waiting for the Fold line's camera to stop feeling like a compromise next to Samsung's flagship S Ultra, this is the closest it's got. Whether that's worth roughly £1,600-plus depends entirely on how much you use a foldable's cameras versus its screen. Pre-orders are expected to open the same day as the event, with two new Galaxy Watches, including a heavily revised Watch Ultra 2, also on the bill.
