Thirty to forty dollars a month. That is what people report cutting when a home server replaces cloud storage, photo backup, a password manager and a streaming subscription. At that rate the hardware pays for itself somewhere between month twelve and month eighteen.
Here is what the three tiers actually get you.
Tier one: around 100 to 150 pounds
A Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB of RAM and an NVMe HAT is enough to run Docker and Portainer and learn how the whole thing fits together. It draws almost nothing, it fits behind a router, and if you break it you have lost the price of a takeaway.

Tier two: an N100 mini PC under 150 pounds
This is the tier most people should buy. An Intel N100 or N305 mini PC, something like the Beelink Mini S12 Pro with 16GB and a 500GB SSD, idles below 10 watts and handles multiple 4K transcodes at once.
Ten watts continuous is roughly 88 kilowatt hours a year. At UK rates that is a running cost you will struggle to notice on a bill, which is the point. The machine has to be cheap enough to leave switched on and forget about.
Tier three: 250 to 400 pounds
Around this budget you get something like a Beelink SER5 MAX with 32GB running Proxmox, which covers about 90 percent of what people want from a homelab. Virtual machines, containers, a media stack, and enough headroom to experiment without taking the whole thing down.

Storage
Two bays with hardware transcoding is the consensus sweet spot, because mirroring covers the failure case people actually experience: one drive dies, nothing else does. For bulk storage use drives rated for continuous spin, such as WD Red Plus or the Seagate IronWolf Pro 8TB. A Samsung 990 PRO 2TB NVMe handles the boot and container volumes.
Desktop drives will work until they do not, and the failure tends to arrive on the weekend you needed the backup.
Why the timing matters
Memory pricing is the part worth sitting with. DDR5 kits are up sharply year on year, enterprise SSD contract prices rose roughly 80 percent in the first quarter of 2026, and most forecasts put real relief in late 2027 at the earliest. We covered the causes of the 2026 memory price rise separately.
That inverts the usual advice. Normally you wait, because components get cheaper. Right now the machine holds its value while the parts inside it get more expensive, which makes buying the finished mini PC now the cheaper path rather than the impatient one.
So: pick the tier, buy the RAM configuration you want rather than the one you plan to upgrade into, and leave it alone.
