Should You Buy RAM Now Or Wait? The 2026 Memory Crisis, Priced

Consumer RAM rose as much as 110 percent in a single quarter. SSDs rose 147 percent. Those are not typos, and they are why your next PC costs more than the one you priced in January.

The numbers

Global DRAM contract prices rose an estimated 90 to 95 percent quarter on quarter in Q1 2026. Q2 added another 58 to 63 percent. Q3 is tracking at 10 to 15 percent, which is the first sign of anything slowing at all.

The cause is not tariffs and not a factory fire. It is AI data centres. Manufacturers moved capacity to high margin HBM and cut output of standard DRAM and NAND, and AI now takes roughly 20 percent of total DRAM production. What it does to the price of a machine

IDC expects average PC prices up as much as 8 percent this year. Lenovo, Dell, HP, Acer and ASUS have all warned of 15 to 20 percent, with worst case reporting as high as 30 percent.

Some vendors are now shipping pre-built desktops with no RAM installed at all. That single detail says more about the supply situation than any forecast does.

So: should you buy?

Six situations, six answers.

1. You already have 32GB and you are not running models locally. Do nothing. You are fine now and you will be fine in 2027. 2. You are on 16GB and planning to upgrade the machine in 2027. Buy the sticks now and keep the machine. Memory will cost more later than the delay saves you. 3. You are building new. Buy memory first, before the case and before the GPU, and plan the rest of the budget around it being the largest line item. 4. You are buying a pre-built. Check the listing for whether RAM is included. Then check it again. 5. You need storage. SSD prices moved harder than DRAM in percentage terms, so buy the capacity you will want in two years rather than the capacity you need this week. 6. You are waiting for a crash. Do not. The supply imbalance is forecast to run through 2027.

The one softening signal

Tom's Hardware reports the consumer surge beginning to cool as buyers hit an affordability limit and simply stop paying. Contract prices are still climbing, because AI demand has not blinked. Cooling is not falling, and a plateau at these prices is still these prices.

The number to watch is Q4 contract pricing. If it lands under 10 percent, the worst of this was Q1 and Q2. If it does not, 2027 budgets need rewriting.
