An F-16 fighter jet just flew under complete AI control. Not a stripped-down test plane, not a simulator, not a drone built to look like one. A standard operational F-16, the kind that flies combat missions, with an AI agent handling the stick.

What VENOM Actually Is

DARPA and the U.S. Air Force tested the VENOM autonomy kit at Eglin Air Force Base in June 2026. VENOM is a bolt-on system designed to fit existing F-16s without major airframe modifications. Once installed, it lets an AI agent handle flight control, navigation, and decision-making while a human pilot monitors from the cockpit.

The pilot can flip between human and AI control with a switch. Think of it less as replacing the pilot and more as giving the aircraft a second brain that can take over when needed.

Why This Is Different From Previous Tests

You might remember the ACE program flights where DARPA proved an AI could dogfight in an X-62A VISTA, a one-off experimental test aircraft. That was a proof of concept. VENOM is the production step.

The X-62A is a unique plane. There is one of it. F-16s, on the other hand, number over 3,000 in active service across more than 25 countries. If VENOM works at scale, every single one of those jets becomes a candidate for autonomous operation. That is not a future capability. The hardware exists today and the software just proved it can fly the real thing.

What Comes Next

The immediate application is not fully autonomous combat. It is reducing pilot workload during high-stress phases of flight, enabling drone wingman coordination, and eventually allowing unmanned F-16s to fly alongside manned aircraft in contested airspace.

Several allied air forces have already expressed interest in autonomous retrofit programmes for their F-16 fleets. The economics make sense: converting an existing jet is dramatically cheaper than designing a new unmanned platform from scratch.
