Databricks launches Unity AI Gateway to control runaway agent costs
As agent based workflows spread, so do the bills. Databricks launched Unity AI Gateway, a platform built to help organisations manage AI spend across providers, with spending limits, protection against runaway usage, model selection guidance, and consumption monitoring.
It is the least glamorous announcement of the week and possibly the most useful. Autonomous agents are brilliant at doing work, and equally brilliant at quietly burning through tokens when a loop goes wrong or a task balloons. Without a meter and a cap, the first sign of trouble is the invoice.
This is what a maturing technology looks like. The exciting phase is building agents that work. The grown up phase is putting governance, budgets, and observability around them so finance does not get a nasty surprise.
Our take: if your team is running anything autonomous in production, cost controls are no longer optional. Whether you use this product or build your own guardrails, put a ceiling on spend before you scale up, not after.
