AMD is putting £2 billion into UK AI supercomputing

21 July 2026 · 3 min read · By Future Technology

AMD's data centre business is having a strong 2026. Revenue in that segment hit $5.8 billion in the first quarter, up 57% year on year, a growth rate that's outpacing even Nvidia's, driven by AMD's MI300 series chips and partnerships with OpenAI and Oracle.

Alongside those results, AMD confirmed a £2 billion commitment to AI supercomputing infrastructure in the UK. It's a bet that Britain becomes a genuine AI compute hub in its own right, rather than simply buying capacity from American cloud providers, and it lands at a moment when chip investment announcements of this size are becoming routine rather than exceptional.

Should you care?

Not a product you can buy, but worth knowing if you're tracking who's actually challenging Nvidia's position rather than just talking about it. AMD's numbers this quarter are a real answer, not a promise.
