Venus Is Not Dead: New Evidence It Is Still Geologically Active

For decades the textbook line on Venus was simple: a dead planet. A stalled world under a crushing, oven-hot sky, its surface frozen in place long ago. A new study says that picture is wrong, and that Venus may still be geologically active right now.

The work comes from a team at ETH Zurich, published in Nature Geoscience on 27 July 2026. Using the first high resolution 3D simulations of how rift valleys form, lead author Xi Yang and colleague Taras Gerya modelled the broad raised ridges, called rift flanks, that run along the edges of Venus enormous canyons.

What the flanks are telling us

The flanks act like a clock. Those wide, raised ridges only appear when a rift is young and either still pulling apart or very recently stopped. Old, dead rifts sag and flatten over time. So when the team matched their simulations against real features on Venus, the shape of the ground told them which rifts were young, and the fit was striking.

The broad uplifts at Ganis Chasma, Dali Chasma and Devana Chasma all look like the young, active kind. The simulations also suggest these rifts are widening faster than anyone assumed, somewhere between 3 and 10 centimetres a year. That is roughly the pace your fingernails grow, which does not sound like much until you remember it is an entire planet doing it.

Why it matters

If Venus is still tectonically active, it changes how we read every rocky planet, our own included. Earth has plate tectonics; Venus seems to do something different, stretching and rifting without the neat conveyor belt of plates. Watching a second world deform gives us a rare second data point on how planets stay warm and restless inside.

It also raises the stakes for the missions already on the way. NASA DAVINCI and ESA EnVision are both heading to Venus later this decade, and EnVision will carry radar sharp enough to look for exactly this kind of movement. A planet that is quietly alive is a far more interesting target than a fossil.

There is a nice humility in all of this too. We wrote Venus off, drew our tidy conclusion, and the planet kept moving anyway. It is a reminder that our nearest neighbour, the one we can practically wave at, still holds secrets we are only starting to read.
