OpenAI is putting its Codex coding agent in a physical box

OpenAI has set 15 July 2026 (10am PT / 6pm BST) as the date it reveals new Codex hardware, and the early images doing the rounds show something unexpected: a physical control panel, not just a software update.

Codex is OpenAI's AI coding agent, the tool that writes, edits and runs code on your behalf. Until now it has lived entirely inside apps and terminals. A dedicated piece of hardware suggests OpenAI wants it to be an always-on presence on the desk rather than another browser tab.

Details are thin ahead of the launch, and OpenAI has not confirmed the leaked images. What a physical control panel actually does for a coding agent is the open question. It could be a status display, a set of programmable controls for approving agent actions, or something closer to a dedicated appliance that runs jobs locally.

Whatever it turns out to be, the direction is notable. The industry spent two years making AI purely software. A tactile device for a coding agent is a bet that some of it belongs back in the physical world.
