Something has become very clear over the past few weeks of NVIDIA announcements: the company is not just selling chips. It is systematically building a layered presence across Asian markets, embedding itself into national infrastructure, university research, enterprise software, and physical manufacturing in a way that is going to be very difficult to displace.
Look at the announcements in aggregate. Japan has launched what NVIDIA describes as the world's first national AI infrastructure, built around NVIDIA Vera Rubin hardware through a partnership with Noetra Corp. That deployment involves 13,750 NVIDIA Vera CPUs and 27,500 Rubin GPUs. Japan's robotics and manufacturing companies are building physical AI systems on NVIDIA Cosmos and Isaac platforms. Japanese enterprises and startups are fine-tuning industry-specific models on NVIDIA Nemotron open models. And now South Korea's KAIST is opening a joint AI research lab with NVIDIA embedded at the campus level.

Why Asia, and Why Now
Asia accounts for a significant portion of global semiconductor manufacturing, AI hardware assembly, and increasingly AI model deployment. South Korea and Japan are both home to companies that are critical to NVIDIA's own supply chain. Taiwan hosts TSMC, which manufactures NVIDIA's most advanced chips. Singapore has become a regional hub for data centre investment.
For NVIDIA, building deep institutional relationships across Asia serves multiple strategic purposes simultaneously. It secures allies in markets that might otherwise pivot toward Chinese alternatives, particularly as Huawei continues to develop its Ascend AI chip line for domestic and regional deployment. It creates a installed base of researchers, engineers, and enterprises who know NVIDIA's tools deeply, which creates switching costs that are more durable than any export restriction.
It also, frankly, looks good in the context of ongoing US-China technology tensions. NVIDIA has faced significant regulatory pressure around chip exports to China, and demonstrating that it is building AI capacity in allied and partner nations is precisely the kind of activity that generates political goodwill.
The Physical AI Layer Is the Interesting One
Most of the coverage of NVIDIA's Asia push has focused on data centres and large language models. The more interesting story, in my view, is the physical AI layer. NVIDIA Cosmos and Isaac are platforms for building AI systems that interact with the physical world: robots, autonomous vehicles, manufacturing inspection systems, warehouse automation.
Japan is particularly well positioned to absorb this. The country has an ageing workforce and a deeply embedded robotics culture across its manufacturing sector. Companies like Fanuc, Yaskawa, and Kawasaki have been building industrial robots for decades, and the integration of AI into those systems is a logical next step that Japanese manufacturers have been preparing for. NVIDIA is not introducing robotics to Japan. It is providing the AI layer that makes existing robotics infrastructure significantly more capable.
The KAIST partnership adds a research dimension to this. Korean robotics companies are also significant, and having KAIST researchers working with NVIDIA platforms creates a pipeline of engineers who will build the next generation of Korean physical AI systems on NVIDIA tools.
What the Competition Is Doing
Huawei's Ascend 910B has made genuine inroads in China as an alternative to NVIDIA hardware, driven partly by export restrictions that limit what NVIDIA can sell into the Chinese market. But outside China, the alternatives to NVIDIA remain limited in terms of ecosystem depth. AMD has made progress with its Instinct MI series, and Google's TPUs are formidable within Google's own infrastructure. But neither has the breadth of software tools, the academic partnerships, the physical AI platforms, or the sheer scale of deployment that NVIDIA has built.
The Asia strategy looks like NVIDIA doing what dominant technology companies do when they sense that a window is open: move fast, sign everyone, and build lock-in before the competition catches up. Whether you find that exciting or concerning probably depends on where you sit in the ecosystem.
