AI just read 30,000 brain scans in seconds

Radiologists spend minutes per scan. An AI called Prima does it in seconds.

Researchers at the University of Michigan built a system that reads brain MRIs across more than 30,000 studies and over 50 different diagnoses with 97.5% accuracy. It auto-flags urgent cases like strokes and bleeds, then routes them to the right specialist before a human radiologist even opens the file.

A separate project called BrainIAC, trained on 49,000 scans and published in Nature Neuroscience, reached similar conclusions from a different angle. Two independent teams, same result: AI can match human radiologists on brain imaging across a wide range of conditions.

Why it matters: Emergency departments lose hours waiting for reads, especially overnight. An AI triage layer catching critical findings in seconds could be the difference between a good outcome and a catastrophic one. Neither system replaces radiologists. Both give them better information, faster.
