Google just lost the engineer who helped close the Gemini gap

On Thursday, Noam Shazeer posted on X that he was leaving Google to join OpenAI. Short post. Enormous implications. Shazeer co-authored the 2017 paper "Attention Is All You Need," which introduced the Transformer architecture that every major AI model now runs on. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude: all built on that paper.

Google paid approximately $2.7 billion in August 2024 to bring him back from Character.AI, the chatbot startup he co-founded after walking out of Google in 2021. He returned as VP of Engineering and co-lead of Gemini. He lasted under two years.

His title at OpenAI is Lead for Architecture Research. That is the person who designs what the next generation of models is actually made of. He arrives as OpenAI prepares an IPO targeting up to $1 trillion in valuation and works on whatever comes after GPT-5.5.

Why it matters: Google spent $2.7 billion specifically to keep Shazeer inside Gemini. His Sparse Mixture of Experts and Multi-Query Attention innovations are already in both Gemini and GPT-4. The question now is what he builds next, and for whom. The answer is OpenAI.
