[Weekly Roundup] AI did the maths, then the row started
Three things happened this week that all point the same way: the expensive part of AI is no longer the cleverness, it is the provenance, the power bill and the patching. One lab claimed a million dollar maths result and immediately got asked where the idea came from. One chip company paid its customer to become a customer. And a flaw scoring a perfect 10 gave federal agencies three days to fix it.
Here is the week in five stories.
Artificial intelligence
1. OpenAI says 10,000 agents cracked a Millennium Prize problem in 88 hours
An unreleased model, roughly 10,000 agents running in parallel for 88 hours, and a proof written in Lean. OpenAI published the result on Tuesday 8 September: a solution showing that a fluid governed by the Navier-Stokes equations can develop a singularity in finite time. Navier-Stokes is one of the seven Clay Millennium Prize problems, each carrying a million dollars. Read the small print, though. The proof adds a forcing term, something pushing the fluid from outside, so it is not the clean unforced statement most people picture. OpenAI also said it has no intention of claiming the prize, and Clay still lists the problem as open.
Then the row. Hours after the announcement, NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster suggested the work may have drawn on his unpublished research held inside Codex. He and Levent Alpoge had been working on exactly this corner of fluid dynamics.
Why it matters: the maths looks real and machine checked proof is a genuine milestone. The harder question is provenance. When the same company sells the coding tool researchers store their unfinished ideas in and claims the discovery its model produced, "the AI found it" needs a paper trail, not a press release.
Chips and infrastructure
2. Qualcomm handed Amazon a 4 billion dollar warrant to win one customer
Qualcomm finally got a Western hyperscaler, and it paid for the privilege. The two companies announced a multi generation deal on 8 September to build custom silicon for AWS AI data centres, aimed at inference. Amazon can buy up to 60 billion dollars of Qualcomm data centre products over the term. In return Qualcomm granted Amazon warrants for up to 25 million of its own shares at 161.26 dollars each, around 4 billion dollars, vesting as Amazon actually places orders. Qualcomm stock rose about 9 percent. The pair also plan optical links scaling to 1.6 terabits per second.
Why it matters: training belongs to Nvidia. Inference is bought on cost per token and performance per watt, which is the one fight a company that spent twenty years squeezing milliwatts out of phone chips might win. The warrant is the tell: in 2026 nobody gets a hyperscaler socket on merit, they buy it with equity.
Security
3. A CVSS 10.0 flaw in SonicWall kit, already exploited, three days to patch
SonicWall disclosed two actively exploited flaws in SMA1000 appliances. CVE-2026-83548 is a pre authentication server side request forgery scoring a flat 10.0, paired with CVE-2026-83549, a post authentication command injection. CISA put both in the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue on 2 September and gave federal agencies until 5 September to remediate. Hotfixes landed on 1 September. A three day deadline is not normal, and it tells you what CISA was seeing.
Why it matters: edge appliances keep topping the KEV list because they are deliberately internet facing, they terminate encrypted traffic, and your endpoint tooling cannot see inside them. If you run any VPN or secure access gateway, patch it on a separate, faster track from everything else, and take the admin interface off the public internet today. Patching does not evict anyone already holding a session.
Hardware
4. Apple's foldable is real, and the date to care about is October
Apple unveiled its first foldable at the Surprise and Shine event on Wednesday 9 September. It starts at 1,999 dollars for 256GB and runs to 2TB, it is the thinnest iPhone Apple has built, and folded it is roughly passport sized. The part most coverage buried: pre orders open 16 October, with availability from 23 October, so the launch week verdicts are all hands on impressions rather than reviews. Regional pricing and timing vary, as usual.
Why it matters: Apple is seven years late to a category Samsung spent those years de risking, and it has arrived at roughly double a flagship slab price. If you want a book style foldable in your pocket this month rather than next, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 is the mature option and costs less than Apple's entry tier.
Space
5. Saturn grew a ten sided shape at the pole nobody was watching
Saturn's north pole has had a hexagonal jet stream since Voyager photographed it in 1981. The south pole never had a clean equivalent. Now a ten sided structure has been identified circling the southern pole, which would give one planet two polygonal polar jets with different side counts at once. Polygons like this form when a fast circumpolar wind goes unstable at regular intervals, and the number of sides depends on the wind profile. A Saturn year runs about 29.5 Earth years, so seasonal reorganisation is the obvious suspect.
Why it matters: nobody watched it happen. There has been no orbiter at Saturn since Cassini burned up in September 2017, so a structure several Earths wide appeared and the first anyone knew was an analysis pass years later. You will not see the decagon from your garden, but Titan sits right there beside the rings in a decent pair of 50mm binoculars.
One to watch next week
Whether any independent mathematician publicly works through OpenAI's Lean proof, and whether the provenance claim gets an answer. A machine checked proof is easy to verify and hard to attribute. If the standard response to "where did this come from" becomes silence, every future AI research claim inherits the doubt.
