The AI money machine just got weirder
Reports this week say Nvidia is weighing a financing guarantee worth up to 250 billion dollars, tied to OpenAI's planned data centre in Ohio, plus a stake in Ilya Sutskever's Safe Superintelligence. Read that back slowly. The company selling the chips is now helping to underwrite the customer that buys them.
The logic is not complicated. The AI build-out has become so capital hungry that Nvidia has an interest in keeping money flowing to the firms placing the biggest orders. Guarantee OpenAI's borrowing, and OpenAI keeps buying Nvidia silicon. It also locks the relationship in tighter, which matters as AMD and Google's own chips start to look tempting.
It sits alongside OpenAI's valuation, now discussed at around 852 billion dollars. The figures have stopped sounding like a company and started sounding like a small national budget.
Why it matters: When your supplier also guarantees your loans, the line between vendor and investor disappears. Great for demand today, but it makes the whole AI economy more circular, and more fragile if growth ever slows.
