A rocky planet 49 light years away just showed us its air
For years the hunt for life beyond Earth has had one nagging gap. We keep finding rocky planets in the habitable zone, the not-too-hot, not-too-cold band where liquid water can survive, but we could never tell whether any of them actually held onto an atmosphere. That gap just narrowed. Astronomers report the first solid evidence of an atmosphere around LHS 1140 b, a rocky world about 49 light years away that sits squarely in its star's habitable zone. The giveaway was helium quietly leaking into space, a signature you only get if there is gas up there to leak in the first place.
It is worth staying level-headed about what this is and is not. Nobody has photographed blue skies, and nobody is claiming life. This is early evidence, the kind that needs follow-up before anyone writes it in ink. But a temperate rocky planet that appears to be holding onto air is exactly the box astronomers have been trying to tick for a decade.
Why it matters: an atmosphere is the line between a dead rock and a place that can have weather, oceans and chemistry. Confirming one on a nearby habitable-zone planet hands the big telescopes a specific, close target to point at next, instead of a long list of maybes.
