Nvidia just walked into the laptop chip business
For decades the processor inside your laptop came from one of two places, Intel or AMD. Nvidia spent that whole time making graphics cards. This week it stopped staying in its lane. Nvidia has confirmed its own PC processors, the N1 and N1X, built to go head to head with Intel, AMD, Qualcomm and Apple in the roughly 200 billion dollar market for computer brains.
The pitch is a laptop designed end to end for on-device AI. The N1X pairs 20 Arm based cores with Nvidia's Blackwell graphics on a single 3nm chip, with a large pool of shared memory and more than 100 trillion AI operations a second. PC makers including Dell and Lenovo are lined up to ship machines built around it later this year.
For years the "AI PC" was mostly a sticker on the box. A third serious player, one that already owns the AI hardware conversation in the data centre, turns it into a real race on price, battery life and how much of the clever stuff runs on your actual laptop instead of someone else's server.
Why it matters: This is the first credible pressure on Intel and AMD laptop pricing in years, and the first time a mainstream chip has been designed around on-device AI rather than having it bolted on afterwards. If Nvidia ships well, the laptop you buy in 2027 could run a capable assistant without ever phoning the cloud, which changes both your battery life and who gets to see your data.

If reading about Nvidia's chips left you wanting to actually try on-device AI, you do not have to wait for 2027. A current Copilot+ machine like Microsoft's Surface Laptop with a Snapdragon X inside already runs a lot of AI features locally, and the honest headline is battery life. You get most of a working day on a charge, near instant wake, and a genuinely quiet, cool laptop.
