VivaTech turns ten, and Europe makes its move
Europe's biggest tech show hit its tenth birthday this week with a pointed theme: "Impact, Not Illusion." Translation: enough hype, show us the receipts. The show wraps today in Paris.
Nvidia's Jensen Huang used his keynote as a progress report on Europe's "AI factory" plans and sovereign computing, the idea that a region should own the data centres its AI runs on rather than rent them. AWS signed on as a founding partner for sovereign cloud in Europe. There's a "Tech Oscars" now too: the VivaTech Bloomberg Awards launched for the anniversary edition.
The deal that caught my eye: DeepL, the German translation firm, made its first ever acquisition, buying Mixhalo for ultra low latency audio. The pitch is real time speech translation at events, so you hear a speaker in your own language through your phone with no delay. On the same day, DeepL cut 250 jobs to pay for the pivot from text to voice.
Why it matters: Europe is trying to prove AI isn't only an American story. Sovereign cloud and AI factories are the continent's bet to stop renting its AI future from Silicon Valley. If you buy or build tech in Europe, "where does the compute actually live" is about to become a real line on procurement forms.
