Light instead of wires: AI just hit a wiring wall
A startup called Lumilens just raised 700 million dollars, at a 5.5 billion valuation, to do something quietly radical. It wants to replace parts of the copper wiring inside a data centre with light. Instead of pushing electrons down metal traces between chips, the idea is to move data as photons, through optical links, right where the traffic is heaviest.
Investors are piling in for a simple reason. The hard part of modern AI is no longer only the chips. It is feeding them. Training a large model means thousands of accelerators all talking at once, and the wiring between them is starting to choke on the bandwidth, the latency and the power it burns. Optics promises more bandwidth, lower latency and less heat, exactly where clusters hurt most.
If light wins inside the rack, the economics of AI shift. Cheaper data movement means bigger models trained for less, and it nudges the industry off the copper it has leaned on for decades. Lumilens is not alone, but a war chest this size buys a lot of runway to prove it at scale.
Why it matters: the AI bottleneck is moving from raw compute to raw plumbing. Whoever makes the wiring faster and cooler quietly controls how cheap the next generation of models gets.
