Your RAM upgrade got expensive, and AI ate the supply
Your next memory upgrade got pricier this year, and the reason is sitting in a data centre. Over the past twelve months DDR5 has climbed hard: many mainstream 32GB kits now cost roughly two to three times what they did a year ago, and analysts expect the pressure to run into 2027.
The cause is not a shortage of sand or a factory fire. It is priorities. Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron are pointing their wafers at high bandwidth memory, the expensive stacked stuff that feeds AI accelerators, and away from the ordinary DDR5 that goes in laptops, desktops and home servers.
The maths is brutal. A single gigabyte of HBM eats up roughly four gigabytes of standard DRAM wafer area, and AI demand is on track to swallow close to a fifth of the whole industry wafer capacity this year. When the high margin AI memory sells out instantly, the memory you and I buy is what gets squeezed.
Why it matters: this is the moment the AI boom stops being an abstract data centre story and lands on your build. If you have been eyeing more RAM for a PC, a NAS or a home lab, buying sooner rather than later may genuinely save you money, because the squeeze is forecast to last through at least 2027.
