The telescope that swaps portraits for a population census
NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is cleared for launch this Sunday, 30 August, at 07:26 EDT on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy out of Launch Complex 39A. That is roughly eight months ahead of its committed date, which is not a sentence anyone gets to write about a flagship observatory very often.
The headline number is the field of view. Roman carries a 2.4 metre primary mirror, exactly the same size as Hubble's, but its camera swallows a patch of sky at least 100 times wider in a single exposure. Same light-gathering power, vastly more sky per shot. Over the mission that adds up to light from something like a billion galaxies and, on current estimates, around 100,000 new planets. That is more planets than every planet-hunting instrument in history has found put together.
The actual science goal is dark energy. Roman will map where a billion galaxies sit and how their light gets subtly bent by gravity on the way to us, which is the cleanest handle anyone has on whatever is accelerating the expansion of the universe. It also carries a coronagraph that blocks starlight directly, so it can image exoplanets and planet-forming discs rather than just infer them.
Why it matters: Hubble was built to show us objects. Roman is built to show us the shape of everything at once. It is a statistics machine rather than a portrait machine, and dark energy is the biggest open question in physics that a survey can actually go after.
