The AI race just became a memory race

For two years the story of AI hardware was all about the GPU. That is quietly changing. The real chokepoint now is the stack of high-bandwidth memory bolted next to the chip, and the industry has spent this week fighting over it.

NVIDIA and SK Group signed letters of intent on a partnership worth more than 500 billion dollars, pairing NVIDIA's Vera Rubin platform with SK hynix HBM4 memory and a two-gigawatt AI factory in South Korea due online in 2027. AMD is pushing the same button from the other side, with its Helios rack system and Instinct MI400 accelerators also built around HBM4. Supply analysts reckon SK hynix has locked up roughly two thirds of early HBM4 volume, with Samsung and Micron splitting the rest.

The pattern is clear. You can design a brilliant accelerator, but if you cannot get the memory to feed it, you cannot ship at scale. HBM4 is becoming the part everyone is building their roadmaps around.

Why it matters: Whoever controls HBM4 supply effectively decides who can train and run the next generation of large models. It is a bottleneck measured in tonnes of silicon, not clever code, and it will shape pricing and availability for everyone downstream, right down to the AI features in your next laptop.
