A hacker dropped a brand new zero-day hours after Microsoft patched 421 flaws

Microsoft released its August Patch Tuesday on Tuesday, fixing 421 vulnerabilities including one that was already being exploited in the wild. Business as usual for the biggest patch batch of the year.

Then, hours later, a hacker called Nightmare Eclipse published ShieldBreak: a zero-day exploit targeting Microsoft Defender itself. It grants full SYSTEM-level privileges on Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows Server 2025. The exploit bypasses the patch for CVE-2026-50656 using a user-mode callback hook that alters file contents during Defender cloud scans. 100 percent success rate on the latest builds. No patch exists yet.

Any code running on a Windows machine can now escalate to full admin control, disable security tools, steal data, and move laterally across networks. This is a weaponised exploit in the wild with no fix available.

Why it matters: The timing is deliberate. Dropping a new zero-day on the same day IT teams are busy applying 421 patches means defenders are stretched thin and may not notice the new threat until it is too late. If you run Windows in any environment, this is not one to sit on.
