The right to repair movement has scored significant wins over the past few years, and John Deere has been at the centre of most of that fight. The agricultural machinery giant spent years resisting efforts to let farmers fix their own equipment, and the backlash was fierce enough that Deere eventually agreed to open up more of its diagnostic and repair tools. Now there is a working self-repair programme. And farmers, by and large, do not trust it.

Ars Technica's hands-on test of the programme is one of the more interesting pieces of tech journalism this week. The writer paid 4,000 dollars for a robot dog from China (a separate story), repaired a tractor using Deere's service, and came away with a conclusion that is fairly damning in its nuance: the system technically works, but it is structured in a way that keeps farmers dependent on Deere.

What the Programme Actually Offers

John Deere's self-repair service gives owners access to diagnostic software and some repair procedures that were previously locked behind dealer networks. If your tractor throws an error code, you can now, in theory, diagnose what is wrong and in some cases fix it yourself using Deere-approved guidance.

In practice, the process involves Deere's proprietary software, which requires a subscription or one-time payment to access. Some repairs still require a dealer to unlock certain functions even after you have done the physical work, a practice critics call "parts pairing" or software locks. The physical fix and the software authorisation are two separate steps, and you cannot complete the second without Deere's involvement.

This is the same pattern that iPhone repairers have faced with Apple. You can replace the battery yourself, but without Apple's authorisation software, the phone will flag the part as non-genuine and disable certain features. Deere has implemented something structurally similar for agriculture.

Why Farmers Are Sceptical

Farming runs on tight margins and brutal timing. A combine harvester breaking down at harvest time is not an inconvenience; it is potentially thousands of dollars in losses per day. The right to repair fight in agriculture was never really about hobbyists wanting to tinker. It was about farmers in rural areas, hundreds of miles from the nearest authorised dealer, needing to fix their equipment right now.

Deere's self-repair programme helps in some of those situations, but not all. Repairs that require software unlocking still require connectivity and dealer sign-off. In areas with poor internet access, which includes many farming regions, that creates a bottleneck that defeats the purpose.

There is also a trust problem that goes beyond logistics. Farmers have watched Deere fight against right to repair for years, lobby against legislation in multiple US states, and use its software infrastructure to maintain a stranglehold on the repair market. A programme launched partly in response to regulatory pressure and negative press is not the same as a genuine change in philosophy, and farmers are smart enough to notice the difference.

Independent repair shops, which were a genuine alternative before Deere's software locks became ubiquitous, are still effectively squeezed out of most diagnostic and software-dependent repairs. The self-repair programme helps the farmer who can navigate Deere's software ecosystem, but it does little for the independent mechanic who built their business on knowing these machines inside out.

The Bigger Right to Repair Moment

This story sits inside a much larger shift. The EU has expanded right to repair regulations that require manufacturers to make spare parts and repair information available for a range of consumer electronics. Several US states have passed their own legislation. The momentum is real.

But the gap between legislation and genuine repairability is significant. Companies have become sophisticated at offering the appearance of openness while maintaining structural control through software, proprietary parts, and subscription requirements.

John Deere's programme is not nothing. If you are a farmer with decent connectivity and the patience to work through Deere's systems, it genuinely extends what you can do yourself. But the farmers who needed right to repair most urgently, those most remote, most time-pressured, and most dependent on independent repair networks, are still not fully served.

The right to repair movement got a significant concession from one of its biggest targets. The concession just turns out to be smaller than the headline suggested.
