Xiaomi's New Fold Is Aimed Directly at Samsung's Best Phone

· 2 min read · By Future Technology

Key takeaways

  • Xiaomi 18 Fold launched 7 September with a wider cover screen than the Fold8
  • Leica camera tuning and Snapdragon flagship silicon carry over from Xiaomi's main line
  • Global distribution push is new for Xiaomi's foldables
  • Pricing outside China is still unconfirmed
  • Three major foldables now compete in the same launch window for the first time

Xiaomi picked its moment carefully. The Xiaomi 18 Fold launched on 7 September, days before Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 refresh cycle and squarely inside Apple's own foldable launch window. Xiaomi wants this phone talked about as the wide format alternative to Samsung's book style design, and it is the company's clearest attempt yet to take that fight global rather than keep it in China.

The pitch centres on the hinge and the cover screen. Where Samsung's Fold line has always shipped with a narrow, awkward outer display, Xiaomi is going wider, aiming for something that behaves like a normal phone when closed rather than a phone you have to unfold to use properly. Early hands-on coverage points to a thinner folded profile than the Fold8 too, continuing the multi-year race among Chinese phone makers to make folding hinges genuinely pocketable.

Specs lean flagship across the board. Snapdragon's latest silicon, a camera system built around Leica tuning that Xiaomi has used on its main flagship line for several generations, and fast charging that outpaces what Samsung and Apple both offer on their folding phones. None of that is a surprise. Xiaomi has been shipping faster charging than its Western rivals for years and simply keeps doing it.

What is actually new is distribution. Xiaomi has historically kept its best foldables largely out of the US and, until recently, thin on UK availability too. A global push this time round, timed to land alongside Apple and Samsung's own foldable news, suggests Xiaomi thinks the folding phone category has finally grown large enough to justify the marketing spend outside its home market.

Whether that pays off depends on price, which Xiaomi has been cagier about outside China than the spec sheet. If UK and EU pricing lands meaningfully under Samsung's Fold8, that is the story. Foldables have stayed a rich person's toy for five years running largely on price, not capability, and the phones themselves have been good enough to justify the format for at least two of those years.

For anyone shopping a foldable this autumn, the sensible approach is the boring one. Wait two weeks. Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi will all have real, in-hand review coverage by early October, and this is the first year all three have credible folding phones on shelves at once.
