Start with the numbers, because the box will not give you honest ones. In real world conditions Wi-Fi 7 lands around 3 to 5 Gbps. Wi-Fi 6E lands around 1.2 to 2 Gbps. That is roughly 2x to 2.4x, not the 5x you will see printed next to a picture of a spaceship.

The more interesting change is latency. Wi-Fi 6E sits around 10 to 20ms. Wi-Fi 7 sits around 3 to 8ms, because of Multi-Link Operation, which lets a device talk on two bands simultaneously instead of picking one and hoping. That is the feature that changes how a network feels rather than how it benchmarks.

The test that settles Wi-Fi 7 vs Wi-Fi 6E for your house

Plug a laptop into your router with an Ethernet cable and run a speed test. Then read off the result.

  • Under 1 Gbps. Wi-Fi is not your bottleneck. Your internet plan is. A new router will not make a 500 Mbps line faster, and no amount of Wi-Fi 7 marketing changes that arithmetic.
  • Over 1 Gbps, and you game competitively, take video calls for work, or run twenty-plus devices. Wi-Fi 7 earns its price. You have headroom the old standard cannot reach and enough contention for MLO to matter.
  • You are buying a router today anyway. Buy Wi-Fi 7. The price gap has closed to the point where paying for 6E is just buying a shorter lifespan.

That is the entire decision. Everything else is detail.

The client device trap

This is the part nobody prints on the box. A Wi-Fi 6E laptop connected to a Wi-Fi 7 router runs at Wi-Fi 6E speeds. The router cannot upgrade the client. Wireless is a negotiation, and the slower side sets the terms.

As of 2026, Wi-Fi 7 radios are in flagship phones and recent MacBook Pros, and not much else. In a typical house that means the router is running at full capability for one or two devices while the tablet, the TV, the smart speakers, the older laptop and the games console all carry on exactly as before. You paid for a standard most of your hardware cannot speak.

If you have decided to upgrade

Two things worth knowing. First, a single router in the wrong place loses to a cheaper mesh setup in the right places, every time. Coverage beats peak throughput in any house with more than one floor. Second, if the goal is getting one specific machine onto Wi-Fi 7, a PCIe card in a desktop is far cheaper than replacing the desktop.

New laptops are increasingly shipping with Wi-Fi 7 radios as standard, including budget machines like the Snapdragon C powered Acer Aspire Go 15, so the client side of this problem does solve itself. It just solves itself on a replacement cycle measured in years, not on the day your router arrives.

The honest summary

This is one of the most common bad tech purchases in a home: buying bandwidth you cannot reach, with devices that cannot use it, to fix a problem that lives at your ISP. Run the wired speed test first. If the number starts with anything less than a 1, close the tab and phone your provider instead.
