Samsung just led the biggest funding round in European tech history
Key takeaways
- Mistral closed 3 billion euros at a post money valuation above 21 billion, the largest equity round in European tech history
- Samsung Electronics led the round, with the EQT managed Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity as co-leads
- The valuation has almost doubled from 11.7 billion euros in September 2025, when ASML led the Series C
Three billion euros, at a post money valuation above 21 billion. Mistral closed its Series D on 8 September, and it is the largest equity round any European technology company has completed.
The lead investor is the part worth sitting with. Samsung Electronics fronted the round, co-led by the Scaleup Europe Fund managed by EQT and by existing backer PSG Equity. Advent came in for the first time, as did funds managed by BlackRock and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Returning names include a16z, ASML, Bpifrance, NVIDIA and Korelya Capital.
The Mistral AI valuation almost doubled in twelve months
In September 2025 Mistral raised at 11.7 billion euros, in a Series C led by ASML. Twelve months later the number is above 21 billion. Nothing about the company's consumer position changed much in that window. Mistral still has a fraction of the mindshare that OpenAI, Anthropic or Google command outside Europe, and most people who have used a Mistral model reached it through an API rather than a chat window.
What changed is who is buying. ASML led the last round. Samsung led this one. Both are hardware companies with an obvious interest in a frontier lab that is not owned by an American cloud provider, and neither is a growth fund chasing a consumer curve.
Sovereignty is now a line item
Europe has spent three years talking about AI sovereignty and mostly producing rules. The EU AI Act enforcement regime is real, detailed and expensive to comply with, but it does not build anything. Three billion euros does.
Anthropic's compute commitments alone run to 517 billion dollars. Mistral's entire valuation is a rounding error next to what the American labs are spending on infrastructure. Sovereignty at this price buys a credible independent lab, not parity.
Mistral ships good open weight models, its releases hold up against the pace set by the frontier launches of the last month, and it now has enough capital to keep shipping them for several years without a rescue. For a European industrial policy that has produced very little hardware and very few labs, that counts.
What to watch next
Samsung's involvement is the thread to pull. A memory and foundry business taking the lead position in a model lab suggests something closer to a supply relationship than a financial bet. If a Mistral model turns up running on Samsung silicon in a Samsung device, this round will read differently in hindsight.
