Isar Aerospace Puts Europe's First Fully Commercial Rocket Into Orbit

A rocket has reached orbit from Western European soil for the first time, and it was built by a company three university students founded in 2018.

Isar Aerospace launched its Spectrum rocket from Andoya Space Center in northern Norway at 20:12 UTC on 5 September 2026, which was 22:12 local time. A little over seven minutes later the vehicle settled into an elliptical orbit around the planet.

"Making history for Spectrum, making history for Isar, making history for Europe," said Nikolaos Perakis, Spectrum's chief engineer, on the company's launch webcast.

The mission

Spectrum stands 28 metres tall, measures 2 metres across, runs ten engines and is rated to carry about 1,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit.

This second flight, named Onward and Upward, followed a trajectory towards a Sun synchronous orbit. It carried Spectrum's first real customer payloads: five cubesats plus one non-deployable technology experiment, several of them commercial and educational.

Reaching orbit was not the end of the checklist. The initial path was elliptical, roughly 180 kilometres at its closest approach and 500 kilometres at its furthest. The upper stage had to perform a circularisation burn before it could release anything. Isar confirmed successful deployment about two hours after liftoff.

The first flight lasted under a minute

Spectrum's debut, called Going Full Spectrum, flew from the same pad in March 2025 and came back down into the sea less than a minute after leaving it.

Isar completed the investigation within two months. The findings pointed to an unintended opening of a vent valve and a loss of attitude control at the start of the roll manoeuvre as the events that started the failure sequence.

Getting to the pad again took five attempts

Flight two was originally set for January 2026. A pressurisation valve issue moved it to March. Bad weather and a boat straying into the range scuttled several attempts that month. An April 9 try was scrubbed over a leak in a composite overwrapped pressure vessel. A June 15 attempt was stood down after the team detected off nominal behaviour in the vehicle's fluid systems.

None of those stand-downs involved the failure mode from flight one, which is roughly what you want to see from a company that says it fixed the problem.

"We had some setbacks, but we came back stronger from them," Perakis said during the webcast.

The ESA contract had a clock on it

On 27 August 2026, nine days before the launch, Isar signed a European Launcher Challenge contract with the European Space Agency worth 197.8 million euros, funded mainly by Germany with contributions from Austria and Norway.

ESA awarded 543.6 million euros in total under that programme, split between Isar, Spain's PLD Space and Rocket Factory Augsburg. Component A of the challenge requires each company to reach orbit by the end of 2027 before ESA starts using the money to buy operational launches through 2030.

Isar cleared that condition inside a fortnight of signing, which puts it well ahead of the other two on the same contract.

What it changes for European operators

Until now, a European satellite operator wanting a ride had two realistic options: buy from Arianespace, or buy American.

Spectrum does not compete with Ariane 6. At 1,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit it sits in a different class, aimed at the same small and medium satellite work that Rocket Lab's Electron and Falcon 9 rideshare slots currently absorb. What it offers instead is a European vehicle, on a European pad, with schedule control that does not depend on another country's manifest.

Isar says its manufacturing facility near Munich can produce more than 30 rockets a year. That is stated capacity, not current cadence, and the two are very different things. The company has also leased a Canadian launch pad for 150 million US dollars, which suggests it expects to outgrow Andoya.

One orbital flight does not make a launch provider. The barrier that actually mattered, though, is now behind them, and 2026 has been an unusually good year for small launchers generally: Skyroot's Vikram-1 became India's first private rocket to reach orbit in July, and Galactic Energy flew its reusable Pallas-1 at the end of August.

The next number to watch is not payload mass. It is how quickly Spectrum flies again.
