A 2nm chip in a phone. Google got there first.

The Made by Google 2026 event kicks off today at 6pm ET in New York, and the centrepiece is the Tensor G6, the first 2nm processor to ship in a production smartphone. That puts Google ahead of both Apple and Qualcomm on process node for the first time in the Pixel line's history.

Google is launching five devices: the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, Pixel 11 Pro Fold, and the Pixel Watch 5. Pre-orders open today. Pricing is expected to run slightly higher than the Pixel 10 series, though exact figures have not been confirmed at the time of writing.

The hardware headline beyond the chip is Pixel Glow, an RGB LED notification light integrated into the camera bar. It is a small thing, but notification lights have been one of Android's most requested comebacks since Google and other manufacturers dropped them years ago. Google's previous Pixel phones have always been aimed at a loyal fanbase, and this feels like another nod to that crowd.

On-device Gemini is the real story

The 2nm chip is impressive on paper, but the practical difference most users will notice is Gemini Intelligence running natively on the device. Multi-step tasks, things like "find the email from Sarah about dinner and add it to my calendar," can now happen on-device without routing through Google's cloud servers.

That matters for two reasons. Speed, obviously, since local processing cuts out network round trips. But also privacy. On-device AI means your queries, context, and personal data stay on the phone rather than hitting a data centre.

Google is signalling where it thinks the smartphone AI race is heading: away from the cloud, onto the silicon in your hand. Apple has been pushing a similar direction with its Neural Engine, but Google claims the Tensor G6's purpose-built AI cores give it a meaningful edge on inference speed per watt.
