Arm laptops go mainstream: what a phone chip in your PC actually changes

Arm laptops have gone from curiosity to mainstream choice, and 2026 is the year the shift becomes hard to ignore. What "Arm" actually means

For decades, laptops ran on x86 chips from Intel and AMD. Arm is a different chip design, the same efficient blueprint that has run smartphones for years. The catch: app compatibility

For most mainstream apps this is now smooth, and the big names ship proper Arm versions. The rough edges show up in niche professional tools, some games with strict anti-cheat, and the occasional accessory that lacks an Arm driver. The honest rule is simple: check that your two or three must-have apps run natively before you switch. This is a software gap, not a chip fault, and it keeps shrinking.
