A new advanced manufacturing facility has opened in Fort Worth, Texas, and it's dedicated entirely to building and testing NVIDIA AI systems. Taiwanese contract manufacturer Wistron has launched its first US-based plant, a move that reflects the broader shift happening across the tech supply chain as companies respond to pressure to produce more hardware on American soil.

Wistron is one of the major contract manufacturers that builds finished systems using NVIDIA's chips and architecture. The Fort Worth facility will produce NVIDIA AI systems, which in practice means the server and rack-scale products that power cloud AI infrastructure, enterprise AI deployments, and the data centres underpinning everything from large language models to robotics applications.

Why Texas, Why Now

Texas has become a significant hub for advanced manufacturing in the tech sector, partly because of its business-friendly tax environment and energy infrastructure, and partly because of deliberate effort by state government to attract this kind of investment. Fort Worth specifically has been positioning itself as a manufacturing destination, and a high-profile NVIDIA-adjacent facility is a meaningful win for that strategy.

The timing is not coincidental. Trade policy uncertainty, particularly around tariffs on goods imported from Taiwan and China, has been pushing technology companies and their suppliers to establish US production capacity. For Wistron, opening a US plant is a way to serve American customers with domestically produced hardware and to reduce exposure to potential import disruptions.

This fits a pattern that's been building since around 2023, when TSMC broke ground on its Arizona fabs, and which has accelerated through 2025 and 2026. The semiconductor and AI hardware supply chain, which was almost entirely concentrated in East Asia, is being deliberately diversified toward the United States and to a lesser extent Europe.

What Gets Made There

The Fort Worth plant will focus on building and testing complete NVIDIA AI systems rather than manufacturing chips. Chip fabrication remains the domain of TSMC and Samsung foundries; what Wistron does is take those chips and assemble them into finished rack-scale systems, validate them, and ship them to customers.

This is important work. A Vera Rubin NVL72 rack, for example, involves not just 72 GPUs but complex interconnects, thermal management systems, power delivery, networking, and a software stack that all have to work together correctly before the system can be deployed. Testing and validation at scale requires significant physical infrastructure and skilled labour.

Having that assembly and validation process happen in the US means shorter shipping times to American customers, easier servicing and support logistics, and a cleaner story around domestic production for customers who need or prefer it. Government and defence customers in particular tend to have strong preferences for domestically manufactured hardware.

The Bigger Picture for AI Hardware

The opening of this plant is a small but concrete piece of a much larger reshaping of how and where AI hardware is made. NVIDIA has been vocal about its ambitions to have significant US-based manufacturing capacity, and partnerships with contract manufacturers like Wistron, Foxconn, and others are how that actually happens without NVIDIA having to build factories itself.

For the US tech sector, plants like this one represent jobs, supply chain resilience, and reduced geopolitical risk around critical AI infrastructure. The US government has been pushing this direction through the CHIPS Act and related policy, and the private sector response, while slower than politicians would like, is now visible in facilities like the Fort Worth plant.

It's also worth noting that Fort Worth is not Silicon Valley. Manufacturing jobs in mid-size American cities are part of the political argument for this kind of investment, and their value goes beyond just supply chain logic. Whether Wistron's Fort Worth facility becomes a template for further expansion will depend on how cost-competitive US-based assembly turns out to be over time.
