London has its first commercial robotaxi service, and Waymo is not the one running it. Why London is a genuinely hard problem

The city's roads are narrow, frequently unmarked, and shared with an unusually dense mix of cyclists, pedestrians, double-decker buses, and delivery vehicles appearing from unexpected directions. Roundabouts, contraflows, and the sheer density of the city make it a significantly harder operating environment than the grid-based American cities where most robotaxi services have launched first.

Wayve's pitch has always been that its approach to autonomous driving, which leans heavily on end-to-end machine learning rather than the detailed mapping and rule-based systems many rivals use, is better suited to exactly this kind of unpredictable environment. The company has been testing vehicles in London for several years and has built a dataset of British driving conditions that is genuinely difficult to replicate quickly.

The launch is initially operating with safety drivers present in the vehicles, which is standard for commercial robotaxi launches at this stage. Uber has not published a timeline for removing safety drivers entirely, but the commercial nature of the service means paying passengers are aboard, which is the meaningful threshold.

What this means for the broader race

Waymo is not out of the picture in Europe. The company has been working through regulatory processes in multiple countries and the complexity of EU and UK vehicle approval frameworks means that moving quickly here requires a different approach than in the US. Uber's partnership with Wayve sidesteps some of that by backing a company that has already navigated much of the local regulatory landscape.

For Uber, this is also strategically important beyond just London. Wayve raised 1.05 billion dollars in a Series B round in 2024, one of the largest fundraises ever for a European AI company at the time. SoftBank and Microsoft were among the investors, which gives some indication of the level of confidence in the company's approach. That capital has clearly been deployed toward this moment.

What passengers actually experience

The vehicles operating in London are not particularly exotic looking. They are standard passenger cars fitted with Wayve's sensor suite and computing hardware. The experience for a passenger is largely similar to a normal Uber ride, except there is a safety driver who may or may not be actively controlling the vehicle depending on conditions.

Pricing has not been confirmed publicly, but commercial robotaxi services in the US have generally launched at comparable or slightly premium rates to standard ride-hailing. The novelty factor tends to drive initial demand regardless.
