For years, the electric vehicle market has had a frustrating gap in it. You could buy something affordable, or you could buy something genuinely efficient, but finding both in the same car felt like trying to win at two different games simultaneously. Audi reckons it has finally threaded that needle with the new A2 E-tron, and from the specs, it has a strong case.

What the A2 E-tron Actually Is

The A2 E-tron is Audi's most affordable electric car, positioned well below the Q4 E-tron in terms of price and targeting the European compact car segment that has long been dominated by combustion engines. Audi has not yet confirmed final UK pricing, but European press materials suggest a starting price below 30,000 euros, which would put it in genuine competition with the Volkswagen ID.3 and the Renault Mégane E-Tech.

The name is a deliberate callback to the original Audi A2, the quirky aluminium city car that ran from 1999 to 2005 and was ahead of its time on efficiency. The original A2 was never a sales success, but it became a cult favourite among people who cared about how far a car could go on a litre of fuel. Reviving that name for an EV is a smart bit of heritage marketing, and it signals clearly what Audi is prioritising with this car.

The Efficiency Story

The numbers here are worth paying attention to. The A2 E-tron is targeting a consumption figure of under 13 kWh per 100 kilometres, which would make it one of the most efficient electric cars in its class. For context, the Tesla Model 3 long-range rear-wheel drive comes in at around 14.9 kWh per 100 km by WLTP figures. If Audi hits that target in real-world conditions, the A2 E-tron would offer genuinely exceptional range from a relatively modest battery pack.

The expected battery capacity sits at around 55 kWh, which in combination with that consumption figure would give a realistic range of around 380 to 420 kilometres in moderate conditions. That is enough for the vast majority of European driving patterns without needing a charge during the day.

The efficiency is achieved through a combination of factors: a drag coefficient Audi claims is below 0.22 Cd, a heat pump fitted as standard across the range (not as an optional extra, which is how many manufacturers quietly inflate their range figures), and a recuperation system that the driver can tune between coasting and strong single-pedal driving.

Why Affordable AND Efficient Is Rare

The reason most budget EVs sacrifice efficiency is simple: battery cells are expensive, and the easiest way to hit a low price point is to use a smaller pack and accept shorter range, or use cheaper cell chemistry that stores less energy per kilogram. The A2 E-tron appears to use a lithium iron phosphate chemistry for its entry-level variant, which is cheaper to produce and more thermally stable than nickel manganese cobalt cells, but historically gives up some energy density.

Audi's apparent solution is to make the car smaller and lighter than most of its competitors, and to invest heavily in aerodynamics rather than brute battery capacity. It is the same philosophy that made the original A2 interesting, applied to a completely different drivetrain.

What It Means for the Market

The timing is interesting. European EV sales have been under pressure in 2025 and 2026, with affordability cited consistently as the primary barrier for buyers who are interested in electrics but cannot justify the premium over equivalent petrol cars. A genuinely compelling sub-30,000 euro EV from a premium brand like Audi changes the conversation somewhat.

It also puts pressure on Volkswagen's ID.3, which occupies similar territory but has faced criticism for its software quality and perceived value for money. Audi and Volkswagen sharing the same corporate parent makes this a fascinating internal competition.

The A2 E-tron is not on sale yet in the UK, with a launch expected in early 2027. But the specs announced so far suggest Audi has done the hard work on the thing that matters most in the compact EV segment: making a car that does not ask you to compromise.
