A 35-year-old Saudi national working as an engineering lead at OpenAI was arrested on 9 October 2026 after a hidden recording device was discovered in the company's San Francisco executive conference room.

Abdulrahman Alfozan, who had been employed at OpenAI since July 2025, has been charged with using an electronic device to intercept oral communications. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the device was concealed in toilet paper and inserted into a USB port on the back of a television in the executive conference room on or around 28 September 2026. OpenAI personnel discovered it on or around 30 September 2026.

## How the alleged surveillance activity unfolded

According to the complaint, Alfozan is also alleged to have used an unspecified productivity tool to gather details about OpenAI's building addresses, meeting rooms, meeting-room capacities and calendars, leadership locations, and external partner meetings prior to installing the recording device.

Between 24 and 30 September 2026, a chatbot account associated with Alfozan's spouse submitted multiple prompts requesting instructions on building, customising, installing, audio recording, testing, obfuscating, and remotely accessing a device. Further prompts between 27 and 28 September 2026 specifically referenced the device's custom header and unique MAC address.

Closed-circuit television footage obtained from OpenAI's offices shows Alfozan appearing near the executive conference room on multiple dates despite having no authorisation to access or attend meetings there. On 5 October 2026, he entered the room and appeared to look behind the television where the device had been inserted. On the same day, he left a bag unattended in a different room in an OpenAI building, which contained a second recording device, along with his wallet and ID.

## The executive conference room

According to the complaint, the executive conference room was reserved for discussions involving "highly confidential technical, commercial, and strategic information, including proprietary research, product plans, and business-development opportunities, as well as nonpublic information about OpenAI's technical progress and strategic decisions, capabilities, priorities, government engagements, and commercial relationships."

## What the device contained

OpenAI told TechCrunch the device contained "advanced encryption, audio monitoring capabilities, and a mechanism for transferring data designed to evade monitoring." The company used its own artificial intelligence models to understand the device and where it had come from, then referred the matter to the FBI.

OpenAI said it had found "no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data."

## Background and consequences

He was previously employed at Meta as a senior systems engineer and served as a founding engineer at Nash. He has since been terminated.

FBI Director Kash Patel said protecting American SI innovation is a counterintelligence priority. "Protecting American SI innovation is essential to safeguarding our nation's economic strength and national security, and the FBI views that mission as one of our highest counterintelligence priorities," Patel said in a statement.
