## Key points

- GPT-6 Intelligent UI lets ChatGPT reply with tappable buttons, forms, charts and calculators instead of only text.
- OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts responding 44 percent sooner than GPT-5.6 Instant on web-search questions, based on its own internal testing.
- Rollout began on 7 October for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, with Free and Go users scheduled for 8 October.
- The update applies to ChatGPT only, not to the models used in Work and Codex.

OpenAI says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week, and since 7 October many of them can ask it to build a calculator in the middle of a conversation. That is the headline feature of GPT-6, which OpenAI calls Intelligent UI.

Instead of replying with paragraphs, ChatGPT can now answer with tappable buttons, forms, charts and calculators. OpenAI's own examples include splitting a restaurant bill and building a financial calculator you can adjust on the spot.

## What GPT-6 Intelligent UI actually does

Ask a question with moving parts and the reply can arrive as a small interface rather than a block of text. Change a number in the form and the result updates, so you do not have to retype the whole question.

The rollout began on 7 October for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, with Free and Go users scheduled to follow on 8 October. The update applies to ChatGPT only. The models behind Work and Codex are not part of it.

## The speed claim

OpenAI also says GPT-6 Instant starts responding 44 percent sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant on questions that need a web search. That number comes from OpenAI's internal testing, so treat it as a vendor figure until someone outside the company reproduces it.

The model is also described as able to begin answering while it keeps working through the harder parts of a request. That means you see something quickly while the detail fills in.

## Why an interface layer matters

A chatbot that only produces text leaves the last step to you. You copy the numbers into a spreadsheet, or open another app to do the sum. A chatbot that produces the tool itself shortens that trip, and for small jobs a throwaway calculator in a chat may replace a small app entirely.

Very roughly, the chat box is starting to behave like a launcher. That fits the pattern in our look at [Google's recent Gemini improvements](/article/google-s-latest-gemini-improvements-signal-shift-in-ai-development/), where the model is expected to do the work instead of describing it. If you want the background on how models take actions on your behalf, our explainer on [how AI agents work](/article/how-ai-agents-work-explained/) covers the basics, and our [running coverage of AI chatbot news](/article/ai-chatbots-news-reuters-2026/) tracks the wider race.

## What to watch

Generated interfaces raise a plain question: who checks the maths inside the calculator? A wrong formula in a generated tool looks exactly as polished as a right one.

Watch for early user reports of errors in the buttons and charts, and for whether OpenAI publishes any accuracy testing for them. The 44 percent figure covers speed only; the correctness of the generated tools has no number attached yet.
